Unfortunately, there’s not a lot we can do about the genes like hair colour, eye colour, height and personality that our parents passed on to us. There are however, genes that you CAN escape and luckily they involve your health. It’s sad to think though that of all the health conditions and diseases that kill us, a lot of them have a genetic predisposition but almost all of them are avoidable.
Sugar – Socially acceptable crack. It’s addictive, harmful in excess and it’s in almost everything these days! So you can be sure to get your fix no matter where you are. Sugar in excess is a poison and people don’t seem to too worried about the effects of over exposure. It is silently robbing us all of our health and weight gain is one of its least deadly side effects. Read on…..
Now listen up! If you want nice toned arms, legs butt, shoulders, abs – you gotta hit those weights!! And don’t cry to me “But Tam, I don’t wanna bulk up!” UGH! That comment makes the big vein in my forehead bulge! You won’t! You can’t! You don’t have the required equipment! Let’s break it down: Men this is for you too!
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the condition that results from hormonal imbalance. It affects more than 10% of Aussie women and that number is steadily rising. Cysts can form on the ovaries but this isn’t the case for everyone. Poly is another term for many – so many cysts on the ovaries is what PCOS refers to although, the other effects of PCOS are disastrous.
When a polycystic womans ovaries are not working properly and cannot release their egg it is often because they are producing too many male hormones. Their natural balance of hormones are out of whack and a lot of things can cause it: Poor lifestyle choices, Insulin resistance, obesity, high levels of stress, iodine deficiency, hormonal contraception… basically anything that disrupts our natural hormonal balance can influence the onset of PCOS.
Since the beginning of time (at least that’s how it feels) we have been told that weight loss comes down to a simple equation: kilojoules in versus kilojoules out. And whilst that is true to an extent, there is also a dark world of hormonal imbalance that can make weight loss using this equation virtually impossible.
You may well have heard the term Insulin Resistance being thrown around left right and centre but what the hell does it mean? What is it? Do you want it? No. No you really don’t.
Did you know that around 99% of calcium is stored in our teeth and bones? OK then smarty pants, did you know that there is a unique relationship between Vitamin D and Calcium? We all know that we need calcium for strong and healthy teeth and bones, but its Vitamin D that actually helps your body absorb all that calcium, so unless you are exposed to enough Vitamin D then all the dairy in the world aint gonna do squat. What a waste of perfectly good moo juice.
There is nothing worse than losing that momentum and falling off the wagon again. But I bet that deep down everyone knows when they are making a half assed attempt. Sorry but its true. So when you do give in to temptation you decide “oh well – might as well completely stop trying”. WRONG! You dust yourself off and keep going. So what if you gave in and had delicious slice of cake whilst meeting the girls out for coffee. That doesn’t mean that you then have Maccas for dinner and half a block of chocolate during a movie that night. You just pick it up again at the next meal and continue on. Giving up and continuing to indulge throws your body into metabolic mayhem making it harder to get back on track than it was in the first place.
Now don’t go getting all antsy in your panties! I’m still pro encouragement, positivity and all that crap 😉 HOWEVER!! Sometimes in life we all need a bit of tough love. Like the time I lost my apartment keys after a big day at the Randwick races – I started crying like a baby when I’d reached the front door and realised what had happened. I thought I’d ruined every ones night bla bla bla. Cue best friend with a bit of tough love and a brilliant idea to just call a locksmith! Genius! Within an hour we were inside and getting dressed to hit the town!
